Childminders – Stay up dated at this time of change
One of the many ways we look after the needs of childminders all over the country, whether they are members of Childminding Ireland or not, is through the lobbying and policy aspect of our mandate. We spend a lot of our time listening to the needs of childminders. We take this vital feedback and get it into the hands of those in a position to make change happen.
At the moment, childminding in Ireland is facing the most significant changes ever seen. These changes may impact how you work and operate as a childminder. This is why it’s critical that the voices of childminders are heard at the highest levels. Change can be positive but we need to pay close attention to the detail so that childminding is sustainable and can continue to flourish in the future.
You don’t have to be a member of Childminding Ireland, to stay informed or to have your say. As the National Association for Childminding we welcome the opportunity to stand up and speaking up for all childminders. You can follow us on social media too…

What do we know so far?
The National Action Plan for Childminding 2021 to 2028 will see childminders in a system of supports and regulation for the first time in the history of childminding in Ireland. It also means that parents will be able to access the National Childcare Scheme.
Four advisory groups have been set up to recommend how these changes might be done. There are as follows:
- Training and Support Advisory Group are working on the development of a Foundation Training Programme, a Quality Development Programme, and the design of staffed local childminding networks.
- Stakeholder Engagement, Consultation and Communications Advisory Group are working on developing a stakeholder engagement, consultation, and communications strategy for the Action Plan, including communication of reform measures.
- Regulation and Inspection Advisory Group will work on the content of childminder specific regulations, including implications of the home environment.
- Funding and Financial Supports Advisory Group will work on funding and financial support, including review of the Learner Fund and the Childminding Development Grant.
Will these changes be welcome to childminders and parents? It’s too soon to say but with a seat on the Steering Group for this Action Plan we are determined that the voices of childminders and parents are heard.
