It is that time of year when many children are preparing for an exciting new stage in their lives, whether they are starting Pre-School or taking the big step into ‘Big School’ as a Junior Infant.
While this is an exciting time, it can also bring new routines, unfamiliar surroundings, new friendships and lots of change. Whether you are a parent, a childminder or both, there are simple ways you can help children feel confident, secure and ready for this important transition.
Preparing children does not need to be complicated. Everyday opportunities to build independence, talk about what is happening, practise new routines and acknowledge children’s feelings can all help make the transition a positive experience.
Dr Mary O’Kane has kindly provided us with a Tip Sheet, offering practical and reassuring advice to support children as they prepare for this transition. We have also included links below to a range of other useful resources that you may find helpful.

Storybooks can be a lovely way to introduce and explore the idea of starting school. Alongside the books recommended by Dr Mary O’Kane, we would also like to highlight two lovely books by author Alison Curtin: The Pea and the Pansie Start Big School and The Pea and the Pansie Colour Me.
Sharing stories together can provide children with an opportunity to talk about their feelings, ask questions and become familiar with some of the experiences they may encounter as they start school.
Above all, remember that every child is different. Some will be eager to start, while others may need more time, reassurance and support. Being available to listen, talk and reassure can make a real difference.
We wish all children starting Pre-School or ‘Big School’ a happy, confident and supported start to this exciting new chapter.
