Towards understanding and supporting the children
of Refugees and Asylum Seekers whose parents have

A course for primary school teachers and others
working with young children

The course aims to equip teachers with the awareness
and skills necessary to support the children of
Refugees and Asylum Seekers, whose parents have
experienced Sexual Violence and other Trauma

Content of the course
Issues facing Refugees and Asylum Seekers coming
to Ireland, including Displacement and Loss, Previous
experiences of Sexual Violence and other Trauma,
and living in Direct Provision
The impact of Cultural Beliefs on the individuals
experience of Sexual Trauma
The impact of Trauma on both the parent and the
family
The Window of Tolerance: a useful model when working
with trauma
How Attachment and Attunement and developmental
tasks are affected by trauma
The main features of Transgenerational Trauma
Protective strategies adopted by the child in response
to trauma and how these may manifest in the classroom
behaviourally and cognitively.
The main features of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
in the child and how to respond to symptoms
Child Protection Issues
Strategies for supporting the child impacted by
Trauma within the school setting
Identifying and developing resources in the child
Vicarious Trauma and Strategies for self-care when
working with Trauma
The approach is participative and discussion and
questions are encouraged. Teas/coffees will be provided
