The launch of the free pre-school year is a significant development for the childcare sector in Ireland. Under this scheme contracted Childcare providers are paid a fee by the State for each child in the qualifying age group attending their setting thus ensuring that it is free of charge to parents.

Childminders who meet the eligibility criteria may participate in the scheme. For the most up to date information on the scheme please go to the website of the Office of the Minister for Children at www.omcya.ie then click 'Childcare' and 'Free Pre-school Year or click here for a direct link

Síolta, the National Quality Accreditation Programme

All childcare settings participating in the ECCE Scheme are required to adhere to the principles of Síolta, the National Quality Accreditation Programme relevant to the particular childcare setting, and help with this is available.

Childminding Ireland is establishing a set of training and supports to help all Childminders with the Síolta process. Please e-mail Fionnuala@childminding.ie or phone (01) 287 8466 for further information.

Training offered by Childminding Ireland

Childminding Ireland offers Quality Awareness Programme Training which qualifies Childminders for the Childminder Development Grant.

Research shows that quality in childcare services is correlated with training undertaken by childcare providers. Childminding Ireland training is delivered by qualified and experienced tutors and at times convenient to Childminders. Evaluation by participants from our training courses shows that Childminders gain increased confidence and awareness in delivering a professional family childcare service. Childminders who are more knowledgeable, skilled and confident provide better care for children and form better working relationships.

Quality Awareness Programme

Childminding Ireland work in collaboration with many City/County Childcare Committee and other interested parties to deliver QAP training to Childminders and potential Childminders. The training comprises 5 modules covering: Why choose childminding?; Child Development; Hygiene, Health & Safey; Wellbeing of Children; and Play. It is a ten hour programme usually delivered over 5 evenings or 2 Saturdays. Participants do not require any previous qualifications to attend. There is no examination on completion.

Completion of QAP training qualifies a Childminder to apply for the Childminding Development Grant which is administered through your local City/County Childcare Committee.

For more information contact Childminding Ireland or your local City/County Chidcare Committee for QAP courses in your area.
